Project Self-Sufficiency Seeks Donations for Prom Shop

Love is in the air during the month of February, when all thoughts for teenage girls turn to their upcoming prom. However, given the current economic climate, not every family will be able to afford fancy dresses, shoes and accessories for their teens. For those who are unable to afford a suitable dress for the occasion, Project Self-Sufficiency will be hosting their annual “Sister-to-Sister” Prom Shop during the months of March and April. The agency is currently seeking donations of new and gently-used formal wear, including prom dresses, bridesmaids’ dresses, gowns for mothers-of-the-bride, evening bags, jewelry, wraps and shawls, as well as shoes in good condition. Dresses must be dry cleaned and on a hanger.

“The prom is a once in a lifetime event for many girls, and we are hopeful that local residents who may have extra prom dresses in their closets will seize this opportunity to donate them to the ‘Sister-to-Sister’ Prom Shop,” commented Deborah Berry-Toon, Executive Director of Project Self-Sufficiency. “The Prom Shop has been a huge success year after year because of the support we receive from the community. We are confident that the public will step up once again to help these girls enjoy a memorable evening.”

Donations will be accepted Monday – Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m., and Saturdays, 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Those who are unable to make a donation during these hours are encouraged to call the office to make special arrangements. Donations are requested by March 1^st, so that the items can be properly arranged for display. However, formal wear will gladly be accepted through the duration of the Prom Shop, if necessary.

Free Parenting Classes for Families with Children from 0 - 10

Area Designers Join Forces with Local Chefs to Raise Funds for Project Self-Sufficiency

“A Taste of Talent: Dining by Design” will be held at Perona Farms on behalf of Project Self-Sufficiency on Monday, April 16^th, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Patrons will be able to sample hors d’oeuvres, entrees and desserts from 30 area restaurants while bidding on creations by local interior design firms. Now in its 16^th year, the habitually sold-out event will benefit Project Self-Sufficiency, a local non-profit agency specializing in services for low-income families in Sussex, Morris and Warren counties.

As in previous years, stations from 30 of the area’s finest restaurants will be placed throughout Perona Farms, allowing patrons to meet and mingle with the chefs while sampling some of their most renowned dishes. Guests are invited to stroll through the cavernous kitchen at Perona Farms and witness a cooking demonstration by owner Kirk Avondoglio, who is serving as the Culinary Chairperson of this year’s event. The foyer at Perona Farms will be transformed into a showcase featuring the wares of local designers. Patrons will be encouraged to bid on the displays, with the highest bidder taking home the designer’s entire creation. Those who pledge their support at the Sponsorship Level will have the opportunity to win a dinner for eight, catered in their own home by Kirk Avondoglio, with staging for the evening provided by Alicia Shearer and Patti Bruterri, co-chairs of the designing portion of A Taste of Talent.

Enroll in New Jersey Family Care at Project Self-Sufficiency

Project Self-Sufficiency offers open enrollment appointments for New Jersey Family Care, the health insurance plan offered by the state of New Jersey to eligible children and low-income parents, every Wednesday morning, from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m., and every Thursday evening, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

New Jersey Family Care is a comprehensive health insurance program that provides a wide range of services, including visits to a physician, eye glasses, hospitalization, lab work, x-rays, prescriptions, regular checkups, mental health, and dental coverage. Medical services are available at Health Maintenance Organizations in each county. Depending on family income, there may be restrictions on certain services. Coverage in the health care plan is available for children 18 years of age and younger, as well as parents who meet income eligibility requirements. Eligibility is based on family size, monthly income and other factors.

Many individuals who were previously enrolled in the NJ Family Care/Medicaid program were recently switched to a Managed Care plan. Care for these individuals is now coordinated under one of 4 HMO’s. There are no longer any medical exemptions of mandatory HMO enrollment in NJ Family Care. Care for certain childless adults who are not enrolled in the state of New Jersey’s General Assistance Program has been terminated. Interested applicants are encouraged to call Project Self-Sufficiency or visit the New Jersey Family Care website, www.njfamilycare.org, for more information. Individual appointments at Project Self-Sufficiency are free and open to the public, but registration is required.

Guidelines for residency status and income eligibility have recently been revised. Parents and guardians who have not resided in the United States as Legal Permanent Residents for at least five years are no longer eligible for NJ FamilyCare. However, any pregnant women, regardless of date of entry can apply and be determined eligible. NJ FamilyCare is only accepting applications from parents and guardians with work income at or below 133% of the federal poverty level. For example, parents and guardians in a family of four, making up to $2,444 per month, may be eligible. However, some parents and guardians in a family making up to $2,444 may not be eligible because income such as unemployment, child support and government benefits are counted differently.

Parents at higher income levels may have the option of purchasing health insurance for their children at reasonable rates through the New Jersey Family Care ADVANTAGE program. Applicants will be eligible for New Jersey Family Care only if they have been uninsured for a period of three months or more, or if health coverage was lost due to layoffs or other factors. Depending on income, other exceptions may apply for families privately paying for health insurance or for COBRA benefits. For many families, New Jersey Family Care will be free. Other families will pay a monthly premium based on their income and small co-payments for some services.

Immigrant parent/caretakers who are legal permanent residents of the United States must have had that status for at least five years in order to be eligible for NJ FamilyCare. Children age 18 or younger in "Qualified" immigrant status are able to apply for NJ FamilyCare, regardless of the date that they entered the United States; they do not have to wait five years to be eligible. "Qualified" status includes a lawful permanent resident, a refugee, an asylee, a Cuban-Haitian entrant, an undocumented resident whose deportation is being withheld by USCIS, an Amerasian immigrant, a child of an honorably discharged United States military veteran, a child of a member of the United States military, an immigrant paroled for over one year, or an applicant under the Violence Against Women Act. Certain American Indians born in Canada are treated the same as a United States citizen for the purpose of Medicaid eligibility.

Applicants are required to bring proof of income, citizenship information, social security number, and information about existing health coverage to the enrollment appointment. The Family Success Center at Project Self-Sufficiency will host a free workshop, “Using Multiple Intelligences to Help Children Learn,” on Wednesday, January 25th, from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. The presentation will be targeted to parents and educators who desire more information about the process of assessing children’s different learning styles, and creating teaching methodologies to make the most of each child’s strengths. People learn in a variety of different ways depending upon family background and social expectations. The different types of learning styles, identified as “intelligences” in the field of education, can include verbal, logical, visual, musical, physical, extroverted and introverted. Identifying the way a child learns at an early age can help parents and educators tailor the child’s learning environment to make the most of that child’s abilities.

“This workshop is ideal for parents and educators who want to learn how to identify the unique gifts of children whose strengths may not have been picked up by traditional methodologies,” noted Deborah Berry-Toon, Executive Director of Project Self-Sufficiency. “However, parents and educators of children who are having already performing well in school will also benefit from this training.”

The workshop is presented by the Statewide Parent Advocacy Network, the leading parent advocacy agency whose mission is to empower families and to inform and involve professionals and other individuals in the healthy development and educational rights of children.

County Gears Up for Annual Race for the Cure for Breast Cancer

Area residents are invited to attend an informational meeting about the upcoming Race for the Cure for breast cancer at Project Self-Sufficiency on Wednesday, January 25^th, at 7:00 p.m. Participants will hear from Lisa Renwick, Co-Chair of the 2012 Susan G. Komen North Jersey Race for the Cure®, as well as members of Team Project Self-Sufficiency of Sussex County. Information about the upcoming race will be distributed, and updates about the efforts at Komen North Jersey in the fight against breast cancer will be discussed. Light refreshments will be served. The annual race will be held on Sunday, May 6^th at Essex County South Mountain Recreational Complex in West Orange, New Jersey. Volunteers are needed to walk, run, garner support, and assist with other aspects of promoting the cause.

The annual Race for the Cure raises funds for breast cancer education and research. According to the Komen North Jersey Affiliate, 75% of net funds raised at the 2012 event will provide critical education, screening and treatment services for uninsured and underinsured women, many of them located in Sussex, Warren and Morris counties. The remaining 25% will support research to find a cure.

Since its inception in 1997, Susan G. Komen for the Cure ® North Jersey Affiliate has awarded $11.3 million to local breast health organizations in northern New Jersey, with $5.1 million contributed to research projects on the national level. Project Self-Sufficiency is currently partnering with the Sussex County Breast Health Task Force to increase awareness of the necessity of mammograms in the prevention of breast cancer. The “Mammograms Save Lives” program is funded through the Susan G. Komen for the Cure ® North Jersey Affiliate, along with support from Intercar Mercedes Benz, Sussex Honda and the New Jersey Herald. Over the past 10 years, the agency has provided hundreds of free mammograms to women over the age of 40 who are uninsured or underinsured as part of its Breast Health Program.

Make a New Year's Resolution to Brush Up on Your Computer Skills!

Project Self-Sufficiency will be offering a variety of computer classes in January, including a basic Introduction to Personal Computers, an introductory class in Microsoft Excel, an advanced course in Microsoft Word, as well as a course in Power Point and Outlook. The agency also offers a course designed specifically for men. All classes will take place in the agency’s Career Center, which is located at 127 Mill Street in Newton. The fee for each class is $10, with the exception of the free Careering 102 courses. Computer class students must be registered Family Success Center or Project Self-Sufficiency participants; members of the public are welcome to use the agency’s computer labs for job searches, and receive assistance with career and financial management skills, through the agency’s Universal Access program.

A basic Introduction to Personal Computers will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays, January 10^th – 26th, from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. This introductory course is designed for first-time computer users or people with limited computer experience. Students will learn computer basics, including the different components of the computer and the performance of simple procedures. Fundamental keyboarding skills and a brief overview of popular software applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook and Access will also be discussed.

An advanced course in Microsoft Word will be offered on Mondays and Wednesdays, January 9^th – 30th, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., and Tuesdays and Thursdays, January 10^th – 26th, 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. Students will learn word-processing techniques, including the creation of professional-looking letters, faxes, newsletters and other documents, as well as the use of mail merge features used to print address labels and address letters to multiple recipients. Participation in the introductory level Microsoft Word course is required prior to registration in the advanced class.

Those interested in learning about Microsoft Excel are encouraged to attend an introductory class on Mondays and Wednesdays, January 9^th – 30th, from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., or on Tuesdays and Thursdays, January 10^th – 26th, from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. Instruction will center on the creation of spreadsheets, databases and workbooks for use in tracking inventory, sorting data and creating mailing lists. Students will learn how to add, subtract, multiply and divide rows and columns using formulas and become adept at storing, managing and interpreting data. Students must complete the introductory level Microsoft Excel class before registration in the advanced course.

A class in Microsoft PowerPoint and Outlook will be offered on Thursdays and Fridays, January 12^th – 27th, from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. Participants will learn to manage email, set up calendars, schedule tasks, and create custom slide shows.

Microsoft Employment Lab for Men, a special class which introduces basic keyboarding skills and touches on Microsoft applications, will be held on Wednesdays, from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m., January 11^th – 25th. The course will also explore the development of resumes and cover letters.

Members of the public are invited to use the state-of-the-art computer lab at Project Self-Sufficiency to take advantage of the agency’s Work Connections “Universal Access” program. These sessions offer full use of the computer lab to conduct job searches, refine networking techniques, create cover letters and resumes, update interview skills, and address salary negotiations. Limited staff assistance is available. An information session about the Work Connections Universal Access program will be held on Wednesday, January 11^th, at 10:00 a.m.

Department of Children & Families Commissioner Allison Blake Volunteers at the Season of Hope Toy Shop

As part of the Christie Administration’s “Season of Service” initiative, Department of Children and Families (DCF) Commissioner Allison Blake volunteered at the Season of Hope Toy Shop at Project Self-Sufficiency in Newton, Sussex County on Friday, to assist in the agency’s efforts to distribute gifts to thousands of local families in need.

The “Season of Service” was announced by Governor and First Lady Christie on Thanksgiving Eve. The initiative builds on the same commitment to community the Governor emphasized in his 2010 inaugural address with members of the cabinet volunteering their time in a variety of ways over the next month.

The Season of Hope Toy Shop is a collaborative effort spearheaded by Project Self-Sufficiency with the assistance of Pass it Along, the New Jersey Herald, Intercar Mercedes Benz, Sussex Honda, Mugs Media and hundreds of volunteers. The toy drive helps local parents who cannot afford to purchase holiday gifts for their children. Families are referred to the toy drive by social service agencies, such as the Division of Youth and Family Services, churches and other non-profit organizations.

“It is so wonderful to see people using their hearts and their talents to help better the lives of New Jersey’s children and families,” DCF Commissioner Blake said. “We are very thankful for the generosity of each person who has been a part of the project spearheaded by Project Self-Sufficiency, and we hope that their efforts will serve as an example for others who may find it in their hearts to support children and families in their communities.”

“The Season of Hope toy drive is unique because it is run by Sussex County agencies on behalf of Sussex County families. Donors can be assured that the gifts they contribute will stay right here in our area,” noted Deborah Berry-Toon, Executive Director of Project Self-Sufficiency. “The toy shop offers gifts for children of all ages, but it also offers the gift of hope and dignity to parents as they search for presents for their loved ones. The continued economic downturn has caused many families to turn to the Season of Hope toy drive for assistance this year. As a result, the toy drive set a goal of 10,000 items for distribution to children of all ages. Individuals, Girl Scout troops, churches, schools, civic groups and numerous other organizations rallied to conduct toy drives on behalf of the Season of Hope toy drive this year.

The Department of Children and Families (DCF), New Jersey’s state child welfare agency, was created in July 2006 as the state’s first Cabinet agency devoted exclusively to serving and safeguarding the most vulnerable children and families in New Jersey. Sussex County Freeholder Phil Crabb visits the Little Sprouts Early Learning Center

Phil Crabb, Sussex County Freeholder, recently stopped by the pre-school classroom at the Little Sprouts Early Learning Center to share a few favorite story books as part of Project Self-Sufficiency’s Celebrity Reader program. "Reading to the children brings back memories of how much I enjoyed the days leading up to the holiday season," remarked Phil.

The Celebrity Reader program is a component of Project Self-Sufficiency’s Family Literacy Program, which exists primarily to assist parents with obtaining their GED or with passing the college placement exam. While in the program, parents also engage in a variety of activities designed to promote literacy within the entire family.

The Season of Hope Holiday Toy Drive aims to gather 10,000 toys for local low-income families by December 12^th, announced toy drive coordinators Project Self-Sufficiency, Pass it Along, the New Jersey Herald, Intercar Mercedes Benz and Mugs Media. The organizations have joined forces once again to gather the toys from area businesses, civic groups, and individuals. Toys and other gift items can be dropped off at Project Self-Sufficiency, or at various drop-off sites scattered throughout Sussex County. Parents and guardians will be able to select a limited number of items for their children in mid-December.

“With the economy still stagnating and unemployment hovering at 9%, many families are wondering how they will provide food and shelter for their loved ones this winter, let alone purchase gifts for the holidays,” commented Deborah Berry-Toon, Executive Director of Project Self-Sufficiency. “Now more than ever, residents of Sussex County are in need of our help.”

The Season of Hope Holiday Toy Drive involves hundreds of volunteers, donors and staff members of the participating organizations, noted Berry-Toon. “The Season of Hope Holiday Toy Drive offers local businesses, civic organizations, churches, and individuals the opportunity to organize toy drives and directly assist families in need. This community has a tradition of being extremely supportive of the low-income families in our area, and we are confident that this year’s Season of Hope Toy Drive will be a success.”

The staggering number of gifts needed this year is a challenge. A wish list has been assembled a wish list for those who want to contribute, but may be unsure of what to donate. Items needed for teens include electronics, such as iPods, MP3 players, calculators, watches, computer games and software, popular CD’s; make-up, perfume, scented lotions, hair dryers, curling irons; jewelry and accessories; sports equipment and team gear, such as t-shirts, sweatshirts, and hats; popular books; clothing and pajamas; backpacks.

Items sought for younger children include books; legos, blocks and k’nex toys; action figures; DVD’s and CD’s; Leap Pad learning games; infant toys; multicultural dolls and toys; Play Doh; trading and collectible cards; matchbox cars; trendy toys.

In addition, donation of wrapping paper, gift bags, gift boxes and stocking stuffers are always appreciated.

Hundreds Enjoy Thanksgiving Feast Courtesy of a Generous Community

Hundreds of Sussex County families will be able to enjoy a Thanksgiving turkey with all of the trimmings this year, thanks to the generosity of local businesses and individuals who donated mountains of food for Project Self-Sufficiency participants this November. Agency staff and volunteers gathered hundreds of frozen turkeys, along with cans of cranberry sauce, vegetables, bags of stuffing mix, dinner rolls, and freshly-baked pies, courtesy of the youth group of the First Presbyterian Church of Newton.

“The generosity of our friends and neighbors towards Project Self-Sufficiency participants is deeply appreciated during the holiday season,” commented Deborah Berry-Toon, Executive Director of Project Self-Sufficiency. “We have a lot to be thankful for this year.”

Project Self-Sufficiency’s mission is to provide the services necessary for single parents, teen parents, displaced homemakers and two-parent families to improve the quality of their lives and those of their children through the attainment of economic self-sufficiency and family stability. Local Writers Share their Professional Experiences at Free Forum

A panel of professional writers recently shared their insights and experiences with teens and adults at Project Self-Sufficiency’s “Becoming You: Writing Careers” seminar. Authors Wendy Mass and Lisa Dale, were joined by freelance editor Karen Kellaher, freelance writer Lori Parks, and photojournalist/blogger Vicki Johnson for a lively discussion which encompassed descriptions of their background, typical day and the challenges each have faced during their careers.

The “Becoming You: Career Explorations” series consists of monthly forums highlighting career opportunities in a variety of disciplines. Successful professionals from the area have been invited to speak about their education, background, and current job description, as well as offer answers to questions posed by the audience. Upcoming subjects will include Healthcare, Non-Traditional Careers, and Culinary Professions.

Computer Classes and Employment Skills Courses offered during December

Project Self-Sufficiency will be offering a variety of computer classes and employment skills courses in December, including offerings uniquely designed for seniors and for men. All classes will take place in the agency’s Career Center, which is located at 127 Mill Street in Newton. The fee for each class is $10, with the exception of the free Careering 101 and Careering 102 courses. Computer class students must be registered Family Success Center or Project Self-Sufficiency participants; members of the public are welcome to utilize the agency’s computer labs for job searches through the agency’s Universal Access program.

PC Skills in Practice is a self-designed workshop which allows participants to learn computer skills at their own pace. Instructors are available for support and guidance, Monday – Friday, from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Microsoft Employment Lab for Men, a special class which introduces basic keyboarding skills and touches on Microsoft applications, will be held on Wednesdays, from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m., December 7^th, 14^th, 21^st and 28th. The course will also explore the development of resumes and cover letters.

Seniors are invited to check out Better with Technology on Tuesdays, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., December 6^th – 20th. Participants will learn how to set up an email account and safely navigate the internet.

The agency will also offer “Careering 101” a free three-part series covering job search and networking techniques, the development of cover letters and resumes, and a session about interview skills, salary negotiation, and workplace literacy. The Job Search component is held on Mondays, 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and 7:00 – 8:00 p.m., and on Thursdays 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. A discussion of Cover Letters and Resumes will be offered every Tuesday, 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and 7:00 – 8:00 p.m., and on Saturdays 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. Those who are interested in learning more about interview techniques are invited to attend sessions on Wednesdays, 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and 7:00 – 8:00 p.m., or on Fridays, 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

“Careering 102” will allow participants to receive tips on time management, goal-setting, interacting with co-workers, and other workplace techniques. Careering 102 is offered every Tuesday, from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. and from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Project Self-Sufficiency’s Career Center also offers assistance with career counseling and assessment, Job Start and Job Search services. The agency’s new Work Connections program allows members of the public to take advantage of the computer labs for use in searching for employment.

With the exception of the Careering 101 course, the fee for each class is $10. Careering 101 and Careering 102 are free. All computer classes at the agency are open to registered Family Success Center and Project Self-Sufficiency participants. Local Businesses Join Hands to Raise Funds for Project Self-Sufficiency

George’s Wine & Gourmet Gallery and Ward’s Flowers & Gifts will co-host “Treasures & Tastings” on Wednesday, November 30^th, beginning at 6:30 p.m., at George’s cozy store, conveniently located at 7 Main Street in the heart of downtown Branchville. A beautiful selection of holiday gift items, gourmet food baskets, holiday décor, crystal, selected wines and other items will be available. Patrons who bring along a new, unwrapped toy for the Season of Hope Holiday Toy Drive will be entered into a special drawing. The event will also feature wine tastings by sommelier George Delgado, gourmet hors d’oeuvres from Chef Frances Delgado, and raffles and drawings for holiday items. A $30 fee will be collected at the door; the majority of the proceeds will benefit Project Self-Sufficiency, a local non-profit agency which specializes in services for low-income families in northwestern New Jersey. Space is limited and reservations are required.

Frances Delgado has worked in the hospitality industry as a professional chef and sommelier for more than 20 years. She has been employed at several renowned establishments, including the esteemed New York City restaurant, Windows on the World. Frances and her husband and fellow sommelier George Delgado teamed up to open George’s Wine & Gourmet Gallery in Branchville following the destruction of the World Trade Center on September 11^th, 2001. The holiday market on behalf of Project Self-Sufficiency allows Frances to combine her professional interests with her desire to give back to organizations which help women and families. “Project Self-Sufficiency offers people the opportunity to learn marketable skills, gain self-esteem and become self-sufficient. Chatterbox Restaurant and Ideal Farms Hold Monster Truck Event to Gather Toys for the Season of Hope

What happens when the owners of a restaurant, a farm stand and a collection of monster trucks get together to come up with an idea for a toy drive? Area residents are invited to find out on Saturday, December 3^rd, when car enthusiasts who bring a new, unwrapped toy or a $5 contribution to the Chatterbox Restaurant between 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. will be allowed to ride in a monster truck in the unused fields at Ideal Farms. All proceeds benefit the Season of Hope Holiday Toy Drive for Sussex County children. The vehicles will be provided by New Jersey Monster Trucks, a company which specializes in hosting monster truck events throughout the state. The Chatterbox Restaurant is located at 1 State Highway 15, at the intersection of Route 206, in Augusta. Ideal Farms is located across the street. Patrons are invited to park at the Chatterbox, drop off their contributions and queue up for a joy ride.

Hosting the event in support of local families was important to Don Hall, owner of the Chatterbox Restaurant and a supporter of Project Self-Sufficiency. “I am very familiar with Project Self-Sufficiency. It is a county-based organization and we want to keep these contributions in the county.”

The Season of Hope Holiday Toy Drive involves a consortium of local social service agencies and businesses who have banded together to collect toys and other items for low-income families in the area. Led by Project Self-Sufficiency, the group includes Pass it Along, Intercar Mercedes Benz, Sussex Honda, The New Jersey Herald and Mugs Media. Project Self-Sufficiency Seeks Donations for Thanksgiving

Project Self-Sufficiency is soliciting assistance for hundreds of low-income families who need a little extra help this month, by asking area residents and organizations to sponsor a family at Thanksgiving. Supporters are asked to purchase a full Thanksgiving meal or provide monetary donations towards the purchase of food. A list has been compiled of preferred food contributions, which includes pumpkin or apple pies; canned vegetables, including yams and cranberry sauce; dinner rolls; gravy; stuffing and mashed potato mixes. Contributions of frozen turkeys will also be greatly appreciated. The non-profit agency distributes complete Thanksgiving dinners to hundreds of local families each year.

“Requests for assistance this year have increased dramatically, and we are hoping to be able to serve several hundred families,” noted Deborah Berry-Toon, Executive Director of Project Self-Sufficiency. “This community has consistently demonstrated compassion towards our participants during the holidays, and we are confident that this year will be no exception. “

Contributions, or notification of the intent to contribute, are requested by Tuesday, November 15^th, in order to allow ample time to distribute the goods to needy families.
