News from Project Self-Sufficiency

Those who are interested in upgrading their computer skills or brushing up on job searching techniques are invited to try out one of the free courses offered at Project Self-Sufficiency.   During July, classes about Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook will be held, as well as a course about computer skills and internet safety for senior citizens.   A special Men’s Lab is offered weekly.   Regularly-scheduled career seminars cover Linked In, resume development, interview skills, financial management, and other topics.   Goal exploration, skills assessment and classes in interpersonal growth will also be offered.   Daytime and evening options are available.   All courses will take place in the agency’s Career Center, which is located at 127 Mill Street in Newton.   Students must be registered Family Success Center or Project Self-Sufficiency participants.  The agency has recently launched a weekly job club and other servi...

Project Self-Sufficiency is offering a $100 gift card to those who refer a young adult, ages 16 – 25, to the New Jersey Youth Corps training and education program.   The summer session of the sixteen-week program launches on July 10 th .   The New Jersey Youth Corps gives those who have not completed high school the opportunity to boost their literacy skills, prepare for the high school equivalency exam, obtain on-the-job work experience, and transition into a career, college or the military.   In order to receive the gift card, referred individuals must enroll in the program, complete the two-week orientation and be inducted into the program. Project Self-Sufficiency participant Cynthia Morales was recently awarded a scholarship by the Sparta Woman’s Club Education Committee in recognition of her desire to further her education.   The Sparta Woman’s Club, a member of the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs, offers scholarships to high school seniors as well as women who are returning to school.   Recipients must be attending college, trade school or business school.   Morales recently graduated from Project Self-Sufficiency’s “Higher Opportunities for Women” employment skills training program and currently owns a pet care business.   She will be attending Sussex County Community College in pursuit of a degree as a veterinary technician.   “Cynthia showed a great deal of determination in completing the HOW program here at Project Self-Sufficiency and she is looking forward to furthering her education,” commented Deborah Berry-Toon, Executive Director of Project Self-Su...
