Summer Workplace Training Available to Local Teens

Local Teens Can Get Paid Work Experience at Project Self-Sufficiency this Summer

A limited number of positions will be available in the Summer Youth Employment Program to be offered at Project Self-Sufficiency during July and August. Eligible Sussex County teens, ages 15 – 17, will receive free employability skills instruction at Project Self-Sufficiency, and will participate in paid, on-the-job training at local workplaces. The Summer Youth Employment Program will take place Monday – Thursday, July 8th – August 15th. Eligibility guidelines include family income, transportation status, current enrollment in high school, and other factors. Free transportation to and from Project Self-Sufficiency and the work sites will be provided to participants; use of the transportation program, interviews, and references from high school staff members are required. Those who have previously participated in the Summer Youth Employment Program are ineligible. Space is limited; applications must be received by June 14th.

The Summer Youth Employment Program offers teens a wide variety of work experiences at local social service organizations and government offices, handling everything from clerical tasks to assisting local shelters with animal care. Teens are also given daily classroom instruction about workplace etiquette, interview skills and other topics at Project Self-Sufficiency’s state-of-the-art Career Center.

The program has a measurable impact on the adolescents it serves. “For many of these young people, the Summer Youth Employment Program is their first workplace experience,” comments Deborah Berry-Toon, Executive Director of Project Self-Sufficiency. “The program gives them guidance about workplace expectations as well as basic job skills and offers each teen the opportunity to explore their interests and aptitudes. The program gives them a foothold in the working world and can serve as a springboard into their future career.”

Little Sprouts Recognized for Excellence

The Little Sprouts Early Learning Center was recently awarded a four-star rating from Grow NJ Kids , the state-sponsored initiative to raise the quality of child care and early learning throughout New Jersey. High School Diploma Program Launches in March

Enrollment for the next session of the New Jersey Youth Corps program at Project Self-Sufficiency is underway. The sixteen-week program launches in March and is currently being offered as a hybrid of virtual and in-person curricula and activities. The New Jersey Youth Corps gives those who have not completed high school the opportunity to boost their literacy skills, prepare for the high school equivalency exam, obtain on-the-job work experience, and transition into a career, college or the military. Interested participants are invited to attend virtual Open House hosted by Project Self-Sufficiency to learn more about the New Jersey Youth Corps and to complete an application. Volunteers and Paid Instructors Needed for High School Equivalency Program

Paid instructors and volunteers are needed to work with young adults in the New Jersey Youth Corps high school equivalency and employment skills training program at Project Self-Sufficiency. Program coordinators are searching for help with tutoring in science, math, social studies, and English as well as assistance with community service projects. Tutors will also assist with basic reading comprehension and vocabulary. Opportunities are available Monday - Friday, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.; a part-time, flexible schedule is offered. "The situation is ideal for college students or educators who might be taking a break from their regular schedule due to the pandemic,” notes Project Self-Sufficiency Executive Director Deborah Berry-Toon.
