News from Project Self-Sufficiency

Hundreds of local children and their families were treated to an early visit from Santa at the annual Holiday party sponsored by the Sussex County Family Success Center and the Sussex County Council for Young Children at Project Self-Sufficiency.   Participants enjoyed goofy holiday games, music and crafts based on a Polar Express theme.   Pizza and cookies were provided by volunteers.   Children were greeted by a special visitor from the North Pole, playfully impersonated by Sussex County Freeholder Director George Graham.   Project Self-Sufficiency is a local non-profit agency which specializes in services for low-income families in northwestern New Jersey. Free parenting workshops will be offered this fall by the Sussex County Family Success Center and the Sussex County Council for Young Children at Project Self-Sufficiency.   Participants will learn about the different stages of physical and emotional development during childhood, as well as techniques for positive discipline and improved communication.   A course designed just for fathers will take place on Tuesdays, beginning September 25 th .   Parents of school-aged children, ages six through twelve, are invited to attend a course on Wednesdays, beginning September 26 th .   All classes will take place from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.; the sessions are free and open to the public, but registration is required.    The agency is located at 127 Mill Street in Newton.   The parenting classes offered by Project Self-Sufficiency incorporate the Nurturing Parent curriculum, which teaches age-specific parenting skills and includes components designed for p...

Julia Buccini, Community Resources Director at Daytop New Jersey, will offer parents and community members the opportunity to learn about the negative impact of adverse childhood experiences on health and wellness at a meeting of the Project Sussex Kids General Council, Wednesday, October 18 th at Project Self-Sufficiency.   Meetings will be held at 9:00 a.m. and at 6:00 p.m., in order to maximize opportunities for participation by the general public.   Meeting participants will also receive an update on Project Sussex Kids activities.   Refreshments will be provided; childcare is available upon request.   Project Self-Sufficiency is located at 127 Mill Street in Newton.
