Breast Cancer Survivors Invited to Free Celebration



Breast cancer survivors are invited to a unique celebration of life at Project Self-Sufficiency on Saturday, June 10th, from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.  The Survivor Celebration will feature break-out sessions, entertainment, lunch and interactive exhibits.  A keynote presentation will be offered by Therapist Diane Lang.  The celebration is free, but space is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis.  Interested participants must call Project Self-Sufficiency at 973-940-3500 or 844-807-3500 to register.

A wide variety of events and activities will be available, all of which are uniquely designed to celebrate the survival of breast cancer by local women.  A presentation by therapist, educator and author Diane Lang will address, “Finding Your Happiness.”  Representatives from Just Breathe Wellness will lead a guided meditation session.  Fitness Coaching LLC staff members will give participants tips about appropriate low-impact exercises to perform during and after recovery.  A Question and Answer session will be facilitated by Medical Oncologist Dr. May Abdo-Matkiwsky.  Project Self-Sufficiency Leadership Council member Susan Knutsen will be on hand with her therapy dog, Sam.  A luncheon will be sponsored by Regional Cancer Care Associates and catered by Newton Medical Center.  Musical entertainment will be offered by the Skylands Dulcimer String Band.  Raffles and other prizes will be awarded throughout the event.

Numerous vendors will be available to offer tips on health, wellness, fashion and exercise, including Project Self-Sufficiency; Alternative Hair at Sunshine; Color Genetics; Diane Lang Counseling; Fitness Coaching, LLC; Just Breathe Wellness; Mary Kay Cosmetics; NJ CEED Program; Planned Parenthood; Regional Cancer Care/Sparta Cancer Center; Soul II Soul; and others.

“Sussex County continues to have a high incidence of incurable breast cancer, so it is with great pride that we are able to honor those women from our area who have survived this disease,” noted Project Self-Sufficiency Executive Director Deborah Berry-Toon.  “With survival, however, comes the issue of maintaining well-being.  This Survivorship Celebration will instruct participants about appropriate steps to take to maintain a healthy lifestyle, including nutrition, exercise and stress relief techniques.   We are grateful to all of the individuals and organizations who have agreed to join in this special celebration of life.”

The Survivor Celebration is sponsored by Project Self-Sufficiency, Regional Cancer Care Associates, Sparta Cancer Center, Sussex County Office of Public Health Nursing and the Sussex County New Jersey Cancer Education and Early Detection.  The Survivorship Celebration is free and open to Sussex County breast cancer survivors, but registration is required.  To register, call 973-940-3500.

High School Diploma Program Launches in March

  Enrollment for the next session of the New Jersey Youth Corps program at Project Self-Sufficiency is underway.   The sixteen-week program launches in March and is currently being offered as a hybrid of virtual and in-person curricula and activities.   The New Jersey Youth Corps gives those who have not completed high school the opportunity to boost their literacy skills, prepare for the high school equivalency exam, obtain on-the-job work experience, and transition into a career, college or the military.   Interested participants are invited to attend virtual Open House hosted by Project Self-Sufficiency to learn more about the New Jersey Youth Corps and to complete an application.   Virtual Open Houses will be held on Tuesdays at 5:00 p.m., January 19 th , 26 th , February 2 nd , 9 th , and 16th, as well as Thursdays at noon, January 21 st , 28 th , February 4 th , 11 th, and 18 th . Volunteers and Paid Instructors Needed for High School Equivalency Program

Paid instructors and volunteers are needed to work with young adults in the New Jersey Youth Corps high school equivalency and employment skills training program at Project Self-Sufficiency.   Program coordinators are searching for help with tutoring in science, math, social studies, and English as well as assistance with community service projects.   Tutors will also assist with basic reading comprehension and vocabulary.   Opportunities are available Monday - Friday, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.; a part-time, flexible schedule is offered.   "The situation is ideal for college students or educators who might be taking a break from their regular schedule due to the pandemic,” notes Project Self-Sufficiency Executive Director Deborah Berry-Toon.   Those with experience in business, construction trades, building maintenance and landscaping are particularly welcome.   The New Jersey Youth Corps gives young adults the opportunity to augment their literacy skills, prepare for the hig
