Little Sprouts Welcomes Special Visitors

Ed and Rosetta Di Tomasso recently visited the preschool at the Little Sprouts Early Learning Center to read several books to the children as part of the center’s Celebrity Reader program. “Project Self-Sufficiency is my favorite organization because it touches so many real issues in our community," explained Rosetta DiTomasso who serves on the agency’s Leadership Council along with her husband. The couple highlighted the holiday season by distributing candy canes and ornaments to the children.

The Little Sprouts Early Learning Center is operated by Project Self-Sufficiency, a local non-profit agency which offers a wide variety of services to families in northwestern New Jersey. The daycare and preschool facility features separate classrooms for each age group, from infants through those entering preschool. Fully-qualified teachers are available in each classroom and the child-teacher ratio adheres to or exceeds state standards. Each classroom has new equipment, as well as learning centers for dramatic play, computers, science, housekeeping, sand and water play, reading, and music. The center also contains an all-purpose room for active indoor play and parent presentations, as well as a sick room for those children who may fall ill during the day. The center is equipped with two separate playgrounds, one for younger tots and one for older children.

Little Sprouts Early Learning Center offers space for 83 youngsters, ages 6 weeks to 6 years. Preschool is free for Newton residents, ages 3 and 4; students must have turned 3 years of age by October 1, 2018. All types of subsidized daycare are accepted, including New Jersey Cares for Kids and Work First New Jersey. The center also offers the National School Lunch Program, providing nutritionally-balanced, low-cost or free lunches to eligible children each school day. The Little Sprouts Early Learning Center was recently awarded a four-star rating from Grow NJ Kids , the state-sponsored initiative to raise the quality of child care and early learning throughout New Jersey. High School Diploma Program Launches in March

Enrollment for the next session of the New Jersey Youth Corps program at Project Self-Sufficiency is underway. The sixteen-week program launches in March and is currently being offered as a hybrid of virtual and in-person curricula and activities. The New Jersey Youth Corps gives those who have not completed high school the opportunity to boost their literacy skills, prepare for the high school equivalency exam, obtain on-the-job work experience, and transition into a career, college or the military. Interested participants are invited to attend virtual Open House hosted by Project Self-Sufficiency to learn more about the New Jersey Youth Corps and to complete an application. Volunteers and Paid Instructors Needed for High School Equivalency Program

Paid instructors and volunteers are needed to work with young adults in the New Jersey Youth Corps high school equivalency and employment skills training program at Project Self-Sufficiency. Program coordinators are searching for help with tutoring in science, math, social studies, and English as well as assistance with community service projects. Tutors will also assist with basic reading comprehension and vocabulary. Opportunities are available Monday - Friday, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.; a part-time, flexible schedule is offered. "The situation is ideal for college students or educators who might be taking a break from their regular schedule due to the pandemic,” notes Project Self-Sufficiency Executive Director Deborah Berry-Toon.
