Parents and Kids Enjoy Family Expo

Parents, caregivers, and children recently attended a special Family Expo hosted by the Journey Family Success Center at Project Self-Sufficiency. The Family Expo featured educational forums, interactive exhibits, dinner, and fun activities for the whole family. Participants also received valuable information about childhood development, and community agencies were on hand to provide additional resources and expertise. A gift card drawing, prizes, and giveaways were highlights of the evening.

“The Family Expo offers a delightful experience for families, with hands-on exhibits that encourage participation and various activities that are designed to educate as well as entertain,” remarked Deborah Berry-Toon, Executive Director of Project Self-Sufficiency. “Because we also spotlight summer family activities, the Family Expo is a perfect opportunity to plan summer outings while connecting with other families. We are grateful to the social service agencies and healthcare organizations who shared their expertise with local families.”

Participants were invited to climb onboard Dot, the Sussex County Library System’s mobile library, and received ambulance tours from the Newton Volunteer First Aid & Rescue Squad. In addition to Project Self-Sufficiency, numerous community agencies provided valuable resources and information, including Atlantic Health System, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Coastal & Northern NJ, Care Plus New Jersey Kinship Navigator Program, Caring Partners of Morris & Sussex, Center for Evaluation & Counseling, Inc., Center for Family Services, DASI: Domestic Abuse & Sexual Assault Intervention Services, DAWN Center for Independent Living, Elizabethtown Gas, Family Promise of Sussex County, Family Support Organization of Morris & Sussex Counties, Ginnie's House Children's Advocacy Center, Mental Health Association, Mental Health Urgent Care, New Jersey Division of Child Protection & Permanency, Office of Resource Families, Newton Volunteer First Aid & Rescue Squad, NJ4S of Morris & Sussex Counties, Northern NJ Safe Kids/Safe Communities, NORWESCAP Child Family Resource Services, Partnership for Maternal and Child Health, Riverstone Therapies, Sussex County Community & Youth Services, Sussex County Division of Social Services, Sussex County Library System, Sussex County Skylands Ride, Sussex County Special Child Health Services, and the Sussex County YMCA.

Innovative Career & Health Fair Coming in October

Area residents are invited to boost their careers and their health by attending an innovative Career & Health Fair hosted by Project Self-Sufficiency , Wednesday, October 21 st , 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Local employers and educational institutions will be on hand to promote job openings and scholastic opportunities. Flu vaccines will be administered by Zufall Health while vaccines for COVID, MMR, Tetanus, and HPV will be available from CVS. In addition, representatives from area healthcare organizations will offer the latest information about the health and well-being of children and families. Further job search guidance, such as mock interviews, will be offered to attendees by Project Self-Sufficiency Career Center staff. High School Diploma Program Launches in March

Enrollment for the next session of the New Jersey Youth Corps program at Project Self-Sufficiency is underway. The sixteen-week program launches in March and is currently being offered as a hybrid of virtual and in-person curricula and activities. The New Jersey Youth Corps gives those who have not completed high school the opportunity to boost their literacy skills, prepare for the high school equivalency exam, obtain on-the-job work experience, and transition into a career, college or the military. Interested participants are invited to attend virtual Open House hosted by Project Self-Sufficiency to learn more about the New Jersey Youth Corps and to complete an application. Little Sprouts Recognized for Excellence

The Little Sprouts Early Learning Center was recently awarded a four-star rating from Grow NJ Kids , the state-sponsored initiative to raise the quality of child care and early learning throughout New Jersey. The rating is based on a rigorous process which considers documentation, classroom environment, in-person observations, and other factors. The Little Sprouts Early Learning Center is an expansive childcare and preschool facility which offers space for 83 youngsters, ages 6 weeks to 6 years, and is operated by Project Self-Sufficiency at 127 Mill Street in Newton. Jennifer Blohm is a Technical Assistance Specialist from the Central Jersey Family Health Consortium , one of three agencies assigned to provide technical assistance and support to programs participating in Grow NJ Kids.
